The depths of God are profound and infinite. These depths are unchartered territory for humanity. Paul tells us that only the Spirit of God understands the depths of God (1 Cor 2:11). The astonishing thing, however, is that God has given us the Holy Spirit to reside within us and to reveal to us the very depths of God (1 Cor 2:12).
The Spirit was not only sent to apply salvation to us but to show us the wonders of God. It gets more amazing still. The depths of God according to Paul in 1 Corinthians 2:6-16 center in the crucified Christ. The depths of God are the things that no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no heart has imagined—the things that God has done and prepared for us (1 Cor 2:9). The Lord of glory on the tree—this is what Paul refers to when he is speaking of the depths of God (1 Cor 2:8-10).
The Spirit is our trekking guide into the glory of God. He leads us through the rugged terrain of God’s majestic sacrifice. He shows us the precipice of God’s unfathomable wisdom in the cross. He plunges with us into the serene and bottomless mountain pool of God’s love.
By guiding us into the wonders of the gospel of the crucified Son the Holy Spirit unveils our eyes to the depths of God. The most magnificent and mouth shutting view of glory on this earth is not a worthy comparison to the vision of God’s glory at the cross. The depths of God are the depths of the cross.
