In the last post we talked about our daily trouble. This post is a fitting sequel. Though daily trouble is certain so are the necessary resources to engage it. Lamentations is a dark book about grief and pain. In the midst of the dark night there is this beam of light, this candle that assaults the darkness. It goes like this: “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness” (Lam 3:22-23).
Fresh new mercies are provided each morning. These mercies are expressions of God’s steadfast love and loyalty. They are the bright rays of God’s covenant faithfulness shining daily upon his people. This text is a clear promise that God will bestow daily grace upon his people. He will give sufficient grace to meet the sufficient trouble of the day. This is a portrait of a God who delights to extend mercy toward us—over and over and over and over again. God sees each new morning as an opportunity to pour out his mercy upon us. We can be certain that tomorrow will bring grace with it.
